Coordinating Body and Supporting Organizations

Health Ethics Week 2010 was coordinated by the Provincial Health Ethics Network with the support of the four organizations listed below.

The Provincial Health Ethics Network (PHEN) is a non-partisan organization with a mandate to connect individuals and organizations from Alberta with each other to discuss health ethics issues, and to provide them with better access to information on health ethics. Offering a number of services including literature resources, workshops, and support for ethics committees, the organization operates from regional offices in Calgary and Edmonton. The John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre (JDHEC), University of Alberta, is an academic interdisciplinary professional group committed to work in the area of health care ethics. Including members of the University of Alberta, the Capital Health Authority, and a variety of public agencies, JDHEC strives to promote professional and public reflection, debate and research on matters of ethical and moral concern in Alberta health care. JDHEC offers a number of services including graduate level courses in health care ethics at the University of Alberta, facilitation of bioethics education programs, and community outreach information workshops and public forums. The Office of Medical Bioethics is part of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine. The Office provides administrative and academic services related to research ethics review process and procedures and to human healthcare ethics. In addition the faculty engage in teaching, supervision and consultations related to health ethics and health law. It coordinates the administrative functions of the U of C’s Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB) provides undergraduate and graduate level teaching in bioethics. In addition to experienced professional administrators for the CHREB, the office consists of academic staff with expertise from areas of medicine, law, nursing, and psychology.
