|
Walter Glannon- Canada Research Chair
in Medical Bioethics and Ethical
Theory; Associate Professor,
Department of Community Health
Sciences; Associate Professor,
Department of Philosophy- University

and proxy consent to organ
procurement for transplantation;
potential (perceived and actual)
conflicts of interest given
physicians' promotion of organ
donation for transplantation and
their duty of care to critically ill
patients; potential ethical conflicts
between a competent patient's
wish to donate organs after death and
family objections to organ donation.

Voices at Dying, Dying to be Heard
- A one act play
|
Written by Dr. Heidi L. Janz;
Directed by Jan Taylor
|
What do a palliative care physician,
an outspoken disability-rights
activist, a man paralyzed in a car
accident, and a nervous social
scientist have in common? Apparently,
not much! Consequently, when this
foursome find themselves part of a
Federal Task Force designated to
develop recommended policies for
palliative care for people with
disabilities, the tensions that
result could rival those seen on any
current Reality TV program. This play
offers viewers a unique insight into
some of the areas of contention and
opportunities for alliance-building
that currently exist between the
palliative care community and the
disability community when it comes to
end-of-life issues affecting people
with disabilities. For more info,
please contact the John Dossetor
Health Ethics Centre at 492-6676.

Exploring Ethics: An Adventure in Choice
|
|
During Bioethics Week, St. Joseph's Hospital will use poetry and other forms of literature to explore the ethical implications of the choices that we make as residents, family members and staff providing care. Shirley Serviss, published poet and experienced instructor, is facilitating poetry reading and writing sessions as a way of raising awareness of ethical issues. "Conversational starters" with poems about ethical dilemmas will be distributed throughout the hospital. We will also be showing the DVD ?For Goodness Sake? at lunchtime. An information display will also be available where staff can explore ethics further. For more info, please contact Mark Vigrass at 431-5382.
