He has an LLB from the University of Alberta and an LLM from the London School of Economics. Richard has acted as a general external counsel for the Caritas Health Group, now Covenant Health, and predecessors for over 20 years. He has also acted as legal counsel to the Chair of the recently formed Alberta Health Services Board. He was formerly an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta?s John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. Richard?s interests include resource allocation, stewardship, privacy and informed consent. | ![]() Grace Frey is a long time resident of Fort McMurray. She has just retired - after 15 years of being a coordinator in various areas, with the Canadian Cancer Society. In her 30 years in Fort McMurray, Grace has and continues to, volunteer for a wide range of groups, councils, coalitions, networks, etc. In 2002, Grace was awarded the Governor General Golden Jubilee medal in recognition of her significant contribution to her city, community and country. Grace, along with her family, continues to enjoy the good life that Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has to offer. As the new community member with PHEN, Grace is looking forward to embarking in a direction that she has great interest in. | | | ![]() Gary Goldsand is a clinical ethicist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. He is an ethics educator for hospital clinicians and staff, as well as an instructor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. Gary's interests include advance care planning, artificial nutrition and hydration, theory and practice in medical decision making, and the role of religion and culture in clinical ethics. His interest in bioethics was triggered while working on a Master's degree in Religious Studies at the University of Calgary, and he subsequently enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Religion and Bioethics at the University of Toronto. His Ph.D. dissertation addresses the question of whether it is ethically permissible to use data from nazi medical experiments. A life-long Albertan, Gary enjoys skiing, hockey, and most other sports when not engaged in ethical contemplation. | | | ![]() Jean Graham of Red Deer is enthusiastic about making a difference to the future of health care, and has been involved in volunteer health care activities nationally and provincially for over 25 years. She has served on the boards of the David Thompson Health Region (where she was chair for 14 years), the Alberta's Council of RHA Chairs, the Canadian Healthcare Association, the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, and currently serves as chair of SEARCH Canada and as a director on the Alberta Blue Cross board. No stranger to PHEN, Jean has also been an integral part of the PHEN board from 2002-2008. After owning and operating an oilfield consulting business for 28 years, she and her husband are now enjoying retirement and spending time with their four sons and two grandchildren. | | | ![]() Deborah Leonard is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse/Therapist who works at a mental health clinic in Edmonton. She has been a nurse in Alberta for over 30 years, and has provided psychiatric nursing care for many vulnerable populations across the mental health system. She has worked as a team member on several multidisciplinary treatment teams, as well as professional development and accreditation committees. The promotion of mental health in the community is paramount in her practice. Deborah feels strongly that the need for ongoing development of ethical practice and decision-making can not be underscored enough. | | | ![]() Donna Van Bruggen lives in Wetaskiwin and has worked in Public Health, Health Promotion and Prevention for many years. She was part of the Regional Ethics Committee in the former Crossroads Health Region from 1997 to 2003 and has been a member of the David Thompson Health Region Ethics Committee since 2003 (currently she is one of the co-chairs). Donna is passionate about ethics- for one of the projects in PHEN? 2005 Introduction to Bioethics course, she shot a documentary (with her project partner in Whitehorse, YT) on healthy, ethical communities. She is also passionate about cats and shares her home with four fur friends. ![]() | Sheila Toews is Regional Director, Ethics Services with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). She has a B.Ed. Honours (University of Warwick, England), and a M.Ed. (University of Manitoba) with a thesis specialization in democracy and democratic curriculum. She also completed a pre-masters year in Adult English as an Additional Language (EAL). Before joining the WRHA in 2002, Sheila worked for the Community Cancer Programs Network at Cancer Care Manitoba. Previously, she taught in the K-12 school system and in B.Ed. programs at the University of Manitoba. She also worked for intercultural agencies where her particular interest was EAL for professions such as healthcare and justice. ![]() | Perry Mill is a bioethics enthusiast (with interests in the ethics of clinical error, professional conflict of interest, organizational ethics, and informed consent), and is a graduate of the PHEN Introduction to Bioethics distance education course. Perry has a B.Sc (Physical Therapy) from McGill University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Victoria. Prior to his current position as Coordinator, Policy Regional Management and Performance Measurement with the David Thompson Health Region, Perry practiced physical therapy in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta hospitals, and worked in policy analysis with the B.C. government. ![]() | Brian Farewell has been Coordinator of the Calgary Health Region’s Regional Clinical Ethics Service (RCES) since its inception in 2003; the RCES provides clinical ethics consultation, education in health ethics and ethical review of policy. Brian is a social worker who was a manager in that Calgary Health Region department for 20 years. Prior to the formation of the RCES he served as a member of several institutional ethics committees.
