Agenda
Alberta's Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship was proclaimed and took effect in Alberta on October 30, 2009, replacing the Dependent Adults Act. Among many other significant changes, a health care provider may now, for the first time in Alberta, identify a nearest relative from a pre-identified list to legally make decisions on behalf of an incapacitated patient under some circumstances. The assessment process to evaluate an adult’s capacity will also be standardized throughout the province and expanded to include a cognitive and functional assessment. Speakers from the Office of the Public Guardian, the University of Alberta John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre and the University of Alberta Health Law Institute will explore ethical and legal issues related to is new Act.
